Ethiopique is thrilled to announce its selection as a recipient of the Press Forward grant, a nationwide initiative dedicated to empowering communities through local news. As one of 205 newsrooms across the United States, Ethiopique joins a collective effort sharing $20 million in funding aimed at covering communities and regions that have historically been underserved.
This grant is more than just financial backing; it signifies recognition of Ethiopique’s vital role in serving the Ethiopian and Eritrean immigrant communities in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area. It is a testament to the importance of amplifying the rich stories and voices within our community, and a signal that national funders see the value in our work.
2024 has been a momentous year for Ethiopique. In addition to the Press Forward grant, we have become proud members of both Lion Publishers and the Tiny News Collective. These memberships, alongside the new grant, solidify our place in a diverse and expanding network of independent, non-partisan news outlets committed to reimagining the future of local journalism in America.
“We are excited to be part of this movement and grateful for the support that enables us to continue our mission,” said Henok Mengistu, founder and president of Ethiopique. “This year has been about growth, recognition, and deepening our commitment to serving our community.”
